How to Maintain Your Hair Health this Summer!

By Salon AVL

Maintaining hair health over the summer requires special attention due to increased exposure to sun, saltwater, chlorine, and humidity. Here are some tips to keep your hair healthy and vibrant throughout the summer months:

1. Hydrate and Condition

Deep Conditioning Treatments: Use a deep conditioner or hair mask once a week to replenish moisture and repair damage.

Leave-In Conditioner: Apply a leave-in conditioner to keep your hair hydrated and protected from environmental stressors.

2. Minimize Heat Styling

Air-Dry When Possible: Let your hair air-dry to avoid additional heat damage. If you must use heat styling tools, apply a heat protectant spray first.

Use Heat Tools Sparingly: Limit the use of flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers.

3. Protect from Chlorine and Saltwater

Rinse Before and After Swimming: Rinse your hair with fresh water before and immediately after swimming in a pool or the ocean to minimize chlorine and salt absorption.

Use Swim Caps: Wear a swim cap to protect your hair from chlorine and saltwater exposure.

Know that chlorine will strip out bright fashion colors!

4. Combat Frizz and Humidity

Anti-Frizz Products: Use anti-frizz serums or creams to keep your hair smooth and manageable in humid conditions.

Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner: Choose hydrating and smoothing shampoos and conditioners to help control frizz.

5. Stay Hydrated

Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health and directly impacts the health and moisture level of your hair.

6. Trim Regularly

Regular Trims: Get regular trims to remove split ends and keep your hair looking healthy and fresh.

7. Avoid Over-Washing

Limit Shampooing: Shampooing too frequently can strip your hair of natural oils. Aim to wash your hair 2-3 times a week and use dry shampoo in between if needed.

Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo: Choose a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to avoid drying out your hair.

8. Healthy Diet

Balanced Nutrition: Maintain a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins A, C, D, E, and B-complex, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and zinc, to support hair health from the inside out.

9. Gentle Handling

Be Gentle with Wet Hair: Wet hair is more fragile, so use a wide-tooth comb to detangle and avoid rough towel drying. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water with a soft towel or microfiber cloth.

By incorporating these practices into your hair care routine, you can maintain healthy, shiny, and vibrant hair all summer long.
